It is now nine months since work began on the renovations at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church, Randwick. The date, to be exact, was 7 September 2007. As we are now coming into July there is great pressure to finish in time for the World Youth Day celebrations which will be conducted here.
The church has had a complete refurbishment starting with the roof which included repair of the ridge capping of the northern transept and box gutter, repair of broken and missing slate tiles, and new guttering to name just a few. Once the exterior repairs were completed the internal restoration began. The leadlight windows have been removed, cleaned and reinstalled with new brass frames The removal of lead paint was essential and this was both laborious and time consuming.
During this period it was also discovered that the Parish Centre required Spalling Concrete repairs. This work was completed quickly as it was an urgent safety issue.
The work is now in the final stages of completion and involves the new Baptistery, the Narthex, carpet replacements and floor sanding which has to be completed by 10 July 2008.
Parishioners have been very understanding throughout all the disruption because as one person said” I look forward to anew and beautiful period for our beloved OLSH.
